Dealing with a rude, disrespectful direct report or staff? Are you feeling a bit stumped? Tips by Dr Flis

Hi Dr Flis,

In the last month I was promoted to a manager position, which I first thought was awesome! Four weeks later and I’m struggling with a real pain in the neck. One of my direct reports consistently interrupts me, sniggers or makes smart jokes at anything I say during meetings. I’ve tried to pull them up, but they ignore me. Their behaviour is also ignored or accepted by the rest of my team.  I’m in a new role and I don’t get why this person’s so special! I just want to stop this behaviour before it impacts my team’s morale, and drives me insane. Can you help me please? Greg

Dr Flis: Your Secret Weapon In Safely Dealing With Bullies - Personal Power!

Your Secret Weapon To Safely Dealing With Bullies Is By Using Your Personal Power. 19th century philosopher, Friedrich Nietzche, said that we create our own reality, which is created by our perspectives and filtered by our values and instincts. This means the only real control we have over anything, is HOW we choose to react to a situation, person or environment.

How bullies fool you into believing it's YOUR fault:The Switch Technique by Dr Flis

How Bullies Use The SWITCH Technique

One of the most common methods used by bullies to fool you into believing, and accepting, that their bad behaviour is somehow your fault:

  • is to deliberately and rapidly SWITCH
  • from being warm, approachable and friendly
  • to suddenly and without notice
  • become dismissive, rude, bullying, threatening or abusive
  • usually as a consequence of some mistake or error that the bully (publicly) accuses you of doing - the mistake can be real, or a product of their imagination - it doesn't matter.

Work Safety: Am I Being GROOMED By A Bully? by Dr Flis Lawrence

One of the common tricks of any consistently manipulative and/or aggressively controlling individual is to trick YOU into believing that you are to blame for THEIR behaviour. Who am I talking about? Maybe a boss, supervisor, co-worker, colleague, staff member, or a client, customer or stakeholder.

One common method used by bullies to groom you into accepting that their behaviour as somehow YOUR fault, is to deliberately and rapidly SWITCH from being warm and friendly to suddenly aggressive, dismissive, rude or abusive. The bully infers that you are to blame for their abuse. Unless you cotton onto what's going on, you will most likely feel embarrassed or apologetic. You will assume that you're somehow in the wrong because this persistent & aggressive rudeness is so odd and unexpected.

YOU DO NOT DESERVE THIS BEHAVIOUR - NO-ONE DOES! NOR ARE YOU RESPONSIBLE FOR THE BULLY'S BEHAVIOUR.
